Best Times to Take a Trip to Vienna

Vienna offers four seasons, just like much of the US. The spring and fall are often the best times to vacation in Vienna. There are fewer crowds, despite the mild weather.

The crowds surge during the warmer, sunny months of summer. And again during the winter when travelers cannot resist visiting the Christmas markets even though it is cold.

You should expect to enjoy unique activities whenever you choose to vacation in Vienna.

Incredible Things to Do During a Vacation in Vienna

Eat Well While Strolling Through Naschmarkt

Naschmarkt happens to be the oldest market in Vienna. And yet, it is still one of the best places to shop for food.

There are more than 120 stalls filled with culinary delights. It is best to sample your way through many of them. This will allow you to eat many of the popular local dishes. You will even find a few foods from other parts of the world.

Guided food tours of Naschmarkt are available. If you are interested, we can chat about adding one to your itinerary.

Explore the Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens

One of the most iconic attractions in Vienna is the Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So, keep that in mind if you are interested in seeing as many of those sites as possible during your travels.

Start inside the palace. Then wander around the 500 acres of Baroque style gardens. I recommend having your camera ready at all times. You never know when or where you will capture the perfect picture for Instagram!

Eat a Viennese Classic Dessert

It is always nice to overindulge a little while on vacation. When you take a trip to Vienna, I recommend eating one of the local classic desserts.

Sachertorte is a decadent chocolate cake. The middle is filled with apricot jam.

This cake was originally made at Hotel Sacher Wien back in 1832. It is best to eat this cake at Cafe Sacher. However, you will find it in other locations in Vienna.

If you do choose to dine at Cafe Sacher, it is best to have a reservation. I can help you with that, as I am planning your vacation in Vienna.

Oh, and if you don’t want to wait until your trip to Vienna to eat a piece of sachertorte, I have you covered. You can find the original recipe here.

See St. Stephen’s Cathedral from Top to Bottom

Most people will walk inside St. Stephen’s Cathedral to see the altar and pews. They may even check out a cherub clutching a skull and a giant sarcophagi.

There is so much more to see at this stunning cathedral though. Head up either the south or north tower to see the rooftop mosaics.

Or head below the cathedral to see the catacombs. There are bones from more than 11,000 people placed down there.

Enjoy Coffee at One of the Many Coffee Shops

Coffee shops are everywhere in Vienna. You probably won’t be able to go too far before stumbling upon another one. Therefore, you can always have your coffee fix.

You can’t really go wrong wandering into any of the coffee shops in Vienna for a cup of coffee. However, an old coffee shop like Demel and Cafe Central should be near the top of your list. They are where the locals will spend most of their time. Inside the coffee shop, they relax, chat, and enjoy the ambiance.

Be prepared to see dozens of options on the coffee shop menus. The locals take their coffee very seriously. I recommend ordering a few different coffees to find your local favorite.

Visit the Christmas Markets

It is easy to get into the holiday spirit in Vienna when you take the time to visit the Christmas Markets. There are a handful of Christmas Markets to choose from when on vacation in Vienna.

One of the favorite Christmas Markets is the Viennese Dream Christmas Market. You will find this market in front of City Hall. Listen to the choir, as you walk around doing a little holiday shopping.

Other Christmas Markets to consider visiting include Christmas Village Belvedere Palace and the Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace.

Cruise the Danube Canal

There is no need to stay on dry land during your trip to Vienna. A cruise on the Danube Canal will have you seeing the sights from a different perspective.

It is best to do this cruise in the evening as the sun is setting. Especially if you are on a romantic vacation in Vienna because it allows you to connect with your partner uniquely.
